Hello, hello, thanks for calling in to say G’Day
I was inspired by the Kraft+ April challenge,
which is to use black and white.
This old photo was taken in 1937 and shows a style of
farming that no longer exists.
The journalling reads:-
The journalling memories are gathered from many conversations around the dinner table in later years; the work was very much the same as it had been in the 1930's. I remember seeing the uneaten, dried up sandwiches in the bottom of the kitbag when Dad walked in the door; his face and arms absolutely black with dust and sweat. He was a tough and resilient man, but when he trudged in the door at night, he was exhausted.

ReplyDeleteAhhh being a country girl raised on a dairy farm I know the farmers of old worked hard and for enough to keep the banks at bay, sometimes living on an overdraft and the payments from the crops went into the hole of debt.. Love that photo, I can almost smell the dust and sweat!! and your journalling... telling it like it was... a brilliant page, very country, very precious of a by gone era.. I love it!

ReplyDeleteLove your page---- & as always your journaling really brings back memories. I loved with my grandparents when grandpa was still doing this. Except he took his tea out in old tomato sauce bottles wrapped in newspaper & tied with string. He never minded cold tea! And the dusty grime look when they came home..... & they really DID do 1/2 a days work before Breakfast!!!!

ReplyDeleteSuch an amazing page Helen! Love the photo and the journalling is fabulous! As Lizzy said...this brings back memories for me too! My grandparents were farmers and they also had amazing old tractors and tools on the farm, that were fascinating and so interesting to little children!! It was a hard life but a good life!

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful photo and memories to have. My dad was a farmer and I relate to so much of this and things I had forgotten come back to me. This is a prize for sure.
